DIY flake kits use thin, low-solids coatings, minimal prep, and one-size-fits-all chemistry. Professional flake systems use high-build industrial-grade resins, mechanical surface preparation (diamond grinding or shot blasting), and chemistry chosen for the slab. DIY kits typically do not fail immediately. They fail just late enough to be frustrating and expensive, usually because prep and chemistry limitations catch up to the floor within a year or two.

A professionally applied flake floor in a residential garage commonly lasts 10 to 20 years with reasonable care. Service life depends on the resin system, the prep quality, the level of traffic, and whether moisture issues in the slab were addressed during the original coating.
